Senate District 20 stretches from the Port of Corpus Christi to the international bridges in Hidalgo County that keep commerce moving at a pace that has made Texas the number one state in shipping products to Mexico.
The diverse district covers the heart of Hidalgo County, and the entirety of Brooks, Jim Wells and Nueces Counties. It deals with border issues from security to trade. It deals with coastal issues, from the environment to marine research to the growing job hubs of our ports. The district’s roots are still strong in agriculture and energy. But maybe most important of all, its booming population is ready to lead in manufacturing, health care, innovation and job creation if we as a state commit to education and ensure an skilled and ready workforce.
That district’s flagship universities include the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), the UTRGV School of Medicine, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Del Mar College in Corpus Christi and South Texas College in Hidalgo County are showing that community colleges too play a critical role in developing our workforce.
The district has also experienced rapid population growth, which has led demographers to predict that the way in which the state addresses challenges in South Texas and along the coast, from education to health care, will determine the entire state’s economic future.
Rich in history, the area is known for honoring our veterans, and proudly recognizes its many sons and daughters who have served their country in uniform.
